I decided to model a hard surface piece entirely in Zbrush taking a small break from characters, creatures, portraits and rest of organic assets I generally spend my spare time for. I just picked up a random design from my favorite movie to feed my sculpting hunger.
Wherever is possible and depending from the asset itself I prefer to sculpt the shapes in Zbrush instead doing poly modelling in Maya, it makes process funnier and faster. I only used Maya for retopology and final rendering using Arnold.
I tried to be faithful with the original prop created by Weta Workshop for LOTR movie as much as I can, but I had to cheat with holes in the front part. These ones needed a very high poly base mesh to be model, so I decided to remove them and keep a nice and clean low poly base topo to show at the end. I also created a little portion of Mordor to give some context to the main asset.
All textures are made in Substance Painter. Helmet details and decorations are still missing and I going to make them in the near future after I will get enough feedbacks about the asset and the general look of the image.
Feel free to drop a line. Hope you like it!
